SubCellular Compartments
Subcellular compartments are specialized, membrane-bound structures—often called organelles—within a eukaryotic cell that create distinct microenvironments. Examples include the nucleus (DNA storage and transcription), mitochondria (energy production), the endoplasmic reticulum (protein and lipid synthesis), and the Golgi apparatus (protein processing and sorting).
